From Mila's kitchen

Crockpot no-peek chicken bakes raw rice directly in a mixture of two cream soups and broth with chicken breasts on top, cooked low and covered without lifting the lid, ready in about 6 hours. The name comes from the recipe's own explicit instruction not to lift the lid while cooking, since every peek releases heat and steam the raw rice underneath needs to fully cook.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 4 boneless, skinless chicken breasts
  • 1 cup long grain white rice (uncooked)
  • 1 can (10.5 oz) cream of chicken soup
  • 1 can (10.5 oz) cream of mushroom soup
  • 1 1/2 cups chicken broth
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp onion powder
  • 1/2 tsp paprika
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Fresh parsley or chives, for garnish

Instructions

  1. Lightly grease the inside of your crockpot.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together cream of chicken soup, cream of mushroom soup, chicken broth, garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, salt, and pepper.
  3. Stir in the uncooked rice.
  4. Pour the mixture into the crockpot and spread evenly.
  5. Place chicken breasts on top of the rice mixture. Season lightly.
  6. Cover and cook on LOW for 5–6 hours. **Do not lift the lid** while cooking—no peeking!
  7. Once done, fluff the rice, check chicken for doneness, and garnish with fresh herbs.
  8. Serve hot with a side salad or steamed veggies.

Recipe Notes

  • Use chicken thighs for extra tenderness if preferred.
  • Add 1/2 cup shredded cheddar or Monterey Jack before serving for a cheesy version.
  • Works best with long grain white rice—avoid instant or brown rice.

Why the lid stays on the whole time

  • Combining two different cream soups rather than just one gives the sauce more depth than a single-flavor base would, while still keeping the method genuinely dump-and-cook simple.
  • Keeping the lid fully sealed for the entire cook, as the recipe insists, is what lets the raw rice absorb enough steam and liquid to fully cook through in the slow cooker's residual heat.

How to get the rice to cook through

  1. Do not lift the lid while cooking, exactly as the recipe's own instructions emphasize, since this is the specific behavior that gives the dish its name and its result.
  2. Use long grain white rice specifically, as the recipe's own notes specify, since instant or brown rice behaves differently and isn't what the timing was written for.

Troubleshooting

The rice is undercooked at the end of the cook time.

This is almost always from lifting the lid during cooking, which lets out the steam the rice needs. If it happens, re-cover fully and continue cooking in 30-minute increments without checking again until then.

The rice turned mushy or gummy.

Check that long grain white rice was used, per the recipe's own notes, since the starch content and cook time of instant or brown rice differs and can throw off the texture.

Rice turns out too firm or undercooked.

your slow cooker might run cooler than average. Next time, try extending the cooking time by 30-45 minutes or increasing the temperature setting.

Storage and reheating

Refrigerate promptly and use within 3 to 4 days. Reheat gently until the chicken reaches 165°F (74°C), adding a small splash of broth or water if the rice has tightened or dried. Reheated rice will be softer than it was fresh from the crockpot.

What to serve with it

The recipe's own notes suggest a side salad or steamed vegetables alongside.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use brown rice in Crockpot No Peek Chicken?

Brown rice requires significantly more cooking time and liquid. If using it, add an extra 1/2 cup of broth and expect to cook 1-2 hours longer until the rice reaches your desired tenderness.

Why is it called “No Peek” chicken?

The name comes from the technique of keeping the lid closed throughout cooking. Opening it releases heat and moisture, extending cooking time and potentially resulting in unevenly cooked rice.

Can I use chicken breasts instead of thighs?

Absolutely! Chicken breasts work well but may cook faster than thighs. Check for doneness around the 3-hour mark on high or 5-hour mark on low to prevent drying out.

What if I don’t have onion soup mix?

Create your own by combining 1/4 cup dried onion flakes, 2 tablespoons beef bouillon granules, 1/4 teaspoon onion powder, and 1/8 teaspoon each of black pepper and parsley.

How can I make my Crockpot No Peek Chicken creamy without condensed soup?

Replace condensed soups with 2 cups of homemade white sauce (roux + milk) seasoned with chicken bouillon, herbs, and a splash of heavy cream for richness.
